Power Tiller Repair and Maintenance Training Supports Farmers in Reducing Harvest Losses

From 5–7 August 2026, a three-day training on “Power Tiller Repair and Maintenance and Harvest Loss Reduction” was conducted at Phnom Kroper Agricultural Cooperative (AC) in Phnom Sampov Commune, Banan District, Battambang Province. The training was organised by officers from the Agricultural Machinery Office of the Provincial Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (PDAFF) of Battambang, in cooperation with a Project Officer from the Building Action for Integration and Development Engagement (BAIDE). A total of 25 farmers, committee members, and members of Phnom Kroper Agricultural Cooperative participated in the training. Strengthening Practical Machinery Skills The training aimed to strengthen participants’ knowledge and practical skills in agricultural machinery maintenance and the use of modern harvesting technologies. Key areas included: Basic maintenance and repair of power tillers (hand tractors); Proper operation, care, and maintenance of agricultural machinery; Understanding the causes of harvest losses and approaches to reducing losses through the use of modern harvesting machinery; and Supporting informed decision-making when considering the adoption of modern agricultural technologies. The programme combined theoretical instruction with practical exercises focused on power tiller maintenance and repair. Participants also received theoretical instruction on harvest loss reduction and the potential role of modern and automatic harvesting machines in improving harvesting efficiency. This combination of technical training and practical agricultural applications enabled participants to better understand how appropriate machinery management and modern technologies can contribute to more efficient farming operations. Training Outcomes By the end of the training, participants had strengthened their practical knowledge of basic power tiller maintenance and repair and developed a better understanding of harvest losses and modern harvesting technologies. The skills and knowledge gained can help farmers to: Reduce machinery downtime; Extend the service life of agricultural equipment; Improve the preparation and use of machinery in field operations; Reduce losses during harvesting; and Make more informed decisions regarding the adoption of modern agricultural technologies. The activity contributes to the broader objectives of the SmartAgriCambodia Project by strengthening farmers’ technical capacity and promoting the practical application of agricultural mechanisation. It also supports efforts to improve the efficiency, productivity, and sustainability of farming practices in Battambang Province.
